Twelve Nights 十二夜 - A Movie Under The Stars
Even though I was extremely busy last Saturday, I knew that I wanted to bring Cory and Cole for the free movie screening of Twelve Nights 十二夜 at the Marina Barrage. More than the heavy television promotion, celebrity backing, and it being directed by Giddens Ko (from You Are The Apple Of My Eye 那些年,我們一起追的女孩) I found the slogan of the film ("Adopt, Don't Abandon") had me pondering on the mindset of Singaporeans today. Currently, many activists I know is all about "Adopt, Don't Buy" . But honestly, you cannot stop people from buying a pet - it is their choice and money. Abandonment on the other hand is something all my pet-loving friends can agree upon.
With such a huge venue and sitting with hundreds of chatty people, it was a tad difficult to really capture the true essence of the show. We even had problems reading the subtitles. But one thing is for certain - you cannot deny how each whine, beg and bark tore at the audience's heart strings. If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the reaction of the audience when scenes of rescues cases are being put to sleep.
In any case, I will be getting Sam's mummy to loan me the DVD. From what The Wong Dogs heard, she cried buckets and Pecan Ah Ma got quite distressed at some of the scenes. Read about their uber adorable take on the movie here.
Some asked why I would want to watch such a depressing tale on the plight of rescue dogs. After all, it is not exactly a tale depicting the 12 days of joyful Christmas. The reason is simple, we do our best to be positive with how we look at life. But in order to do that, we have to realise that not the journey is not a bed of roses. In the same way, I know that not every canine is as lucky as The Wong Dogs or even your pooch to have a place to truly call home.
Besides being excited to catch the much talked-about film, I really wanted to to allow more people to meet the two boys, especially Cole. There are many Singaporeans who have such a fear about Mixed Breeds and with Cole's jet-black coat, that fear is magnified in those unfamiliar with dogs. It was such a joy to have families and kids coming up and asking more about Cole. Of course, it was quite gratifying to inform people he is not for adoption (Hello, he is mine!) but there are many well-behaved and beautiful dogs at Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD) and HOPE Dog Rescue that they can consider.
Twelve Nights 十二夜 refers to the number of days abandoned and rescued canines in Taiwan have before they are put down. Their only hope is for someone to come along to be adopted though not every case is what it seems. The short film was unveiled late last year and has drawn applause for its message, garnering support from a bevy of celebrities. Due to the film's reach, it was reported that adoption rates have been going up since the documentary was screen. For example, a Tainan shelter had 206 animals adopted two weeks after the release of the film. However, Twelve Nights 十二夜 also has its critics, especially from animal shelter workers in Taiwan who insisted that the documentary has misled the audience on their real work.
